Written by
Dr Ayub Macharia

The date was set aside on 20th December 2000. The day marks the date of adoption of the convention on biological diversity in 1992. The day was previously observed on 29th December but was changed to May to give it greater visibility. Kenya ratified the Convention on Biological Diversity on 26th July 1994.

Biological diversity refers to the variety and variability among living organisms in the world and the ecological complexes in which they occur. Kenya has a rich floral and fauna diversity that gives us various products. However , population increase, conflicts in land use activities , urbanization , industrialization and man’s carelessness have been blamed for causing a decline in the global biodiversity and an increase in poverty.
