The day is celebrated on 12th December to mark the day when Kenya got her independence from the British government in 1963. This marked the end of discrimination, oppression and bloodshed and ushered in an opportunity for Kenyans to rule themselves and decide their own destiny .
This day is dedicated to the Kenyan heroes who fought tirelessly and shed blood for freedom of this land. The day reminds people of what they fought for, which includes land and self rule. Every Kenyan is called upon to safeguard this freedom in all ways. As a developing country Kenya experience many economic, social and political problems and sacrifice is needed to steer the country forward. The country needs to take care of its ever – increasing population as well its land and resources.
Suggested activities
- Discuss the economic , social and political problems facing our country and their impact on the natural environment. Suggest solutions to the problems identified
- Invite elderly people and discuss about the role of the natural environment in the fight for independence
- Do more research on the experiences of the local freedom fighters
- Initiate programmes to care for our land e.g. plant trees, clean up the environment, initiate a recycling project etc
- Compose songs, drama and poems on the need for caring for the environment.
- Give prizes to individuals, clubs, groups or institutions that promote best practices in caring for the land
- Write an essay or summary notes on how you celebrated the Jamhuri day publicise your success on this blog.
