Waste management challenges
Challenges facing waste management in Kenya
• Lack of designated waste disposal facilities in most towns leading to open dumping
• Lack of capacity and facilities to handle certain waste types e.g. Polythene bags and Electronic waste
• Attitudes by waste generators that someone else to take care of waste and hence no investment in proper waste handling
• Ambiguity in definition and classification of waste for instance scrap metal is not treated as waste
• Public attitude on waste where it is treated as a “nuisance” instead of a “resource”
• Lack of prioritization of waste management by County governments
